Abstract

This study compared broiler productivity between closed-house and open-house housing systems in Kalukku District, Mamuju Regency. Secondary data from partner farms during 2022–2024 were analyzed, covering 45 houses (12 closed houses and 33 open houses). Observed variables included feed intake, body weight gain (BWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), mortality, and performance index (PI). Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests indicated normally distributed residuals (p>0.05), therefore independent-samples t-tests were applied. Feed intake was higher in open houses than in closed houses (0.093±0.00 vs 0.087±0.00 kg/bird/day; p<0.001). BWG was also higher in open houses (0.060±0.00 vs 0.056±0.00 kg/bird/day; p=0.001). Conversely, closed houses showed better (lower) FCR (1.506±0.02 vs 1.529±0.02; p=0.042) and lower mortality (2.91±1.03% vs 3.77±0.14%; p=0.009–0.015). PI was higher in open houses (374±24.94 vs 352±23.03; p=0.036). In conclusion, closed houses were superior in feed efficiency and mortality control, whereas open houses achieved higher BWG and PI under the local conditions of Kalukku
