Abstract

FADs are fishing aids that function to increase the effectiveness of fishing. In the process of catching tuna, FADs function to stimulate tuna flocks that are roaming to stop or settle not far from the FAD installation location. Based on this, it is very necessary to conduct research on the effectiveness of using FADs as a tool for catching yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares). The research was carried out in September – April 2019 in the waters of Teuk Bone, Luwu Regency. The data used are hand line catches in Five FADs. Data collection includes the geographic position of the fishing area, catch, length and weight of yellowfin tuna, gonad maturity level and oceanographic parameters (temperature and chlorophyll). The results showed that the size composition of yellowfin tuna caught in FADs dominated the size of 60 – 85 cm with a weight of 3-5 kg with gonadal maturity level I -II. The dominance of size 60-85 cm, the highest was caught in FAD 3 as many as 439 individuals while the lowest was caught in FAD 1 as many as 134 individuals. The function model shows that the five variables (temperature, chlorophyll, depth of FADs, length of time of catching and distance of FADs from fishing base) are only temperature and duration of catching on the production of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught in FAD areas. The effectiveness value obtained is 20% with the highest effectiveness in September - October 2018 found in FAD 3 of 35.39% and in March - April 2018 found in FAD 2 of
